DHA or dihydroxyacetone is the key active ingredient in self tan products. Self-tanners react naturally with proteins in the outer layer of the skin via DHA. Products containing DHA produce a gradual tanning effect, starting within an hour of application and continuing over the next several hours. The result is a great-looking tan that is always temporary, because the outer layer of the skin continually renews itself. The resulting tan does not protect from sun exposure.
