Why do I need special sun protection on the mountain?
In the mountain the sun's rays become 13% more intense with every 1000m increase in altitude and also UV rays are 80% more intense when reflected by snow and ice. For these reasons it is recommended that you use a suncare product, which is specifically designed to protect your skin from reddening or dehydration caused by cold, wind and dry air.
Do I need a sunscreen even if it's cloudy or snowing?
Up to 80 per cent of solar radiation can penetrate light cloud cover. Also, snow, ice and even bright rocks reflect UV rays, thus increasing the intensity on your skin and causing sunburn. Fog can be particularly deceptive, as radiation is reflected in tiny particles of water. For these reasons, be sure to wear your suncream even when the sun is not shining.
What is the effect of the wind on the skin?
Cold, wind and dry air in extreme conditions leave the skin reddened and dehydrated. In addition, wind velocity especially in winter sports like skiing and snow boarding, can further increase the freezing effect on the skin. We recommend using products that are specifically designed to protect your skin in extreme conditions.
Why is it so important to protect the lips?
Lips can easily chap when exposed to intense sunrays or extreme cold and wind in higher mountain locations. It is therefore very important to always protect your lips with a very protective water-free product like PIZ BUIN® Sun Lipstick. It contains not only UV protection (SPF 20) but also Vitamin E.
Should I use last summer's sun protection on my winter holidays in the mountains?
In winter it is better to use a sunscreen which provides extra moisturisation and protection against cold and wind in combination with photostable UVA/UVB protection against sunburn and premature skin ageing.
What is Helioplex™?
The latest innovation from PIZ BUIN® is Helioplex™, a breakthrough in sun protection now available in all of the In-Sun products. This new technology is scientifically proven to maintain up to 90% of its active protection after five hours of sunlights. Sunscreens with Helioplex™ provide a photostable UVA and UVB protection so you can enjoy the sun safely.
What is photostability?
A photostable UV filter is literally stable to light (UV being light), it means that solar radiation has no effect on the filter and does not modify its structure. Unlike some suncare products that can weaken their sun protection over time, the new PIZ BUIN® Mountain formulas are photostable. This means that solar radiation doesnt change the protective activity of the UV filters contained in PIZ BUIN® by modifying their chemical structure: their protective properties are unchanged.
